About Well Drilling Methods

Rotary and air hammer systems drill a hole in the rock. These methods are popular because they are fast. Often the well is completed in a day. The equipment is large and expensive.

Cable tool drilling crushes the rock with slow impact forces which opens nearby fractures in the process. It is much slower, but is a time-proven method. Water travels through aquifers (water bearing cracks) in the rock. You can see this sometimes on rock faces of cliffs, or along the highway.  The equipment is old-school and the basis of cable-tool drilling hasn’t changed in over 100 years.
